FAQ
Exams
Please be sure to bring your student ID with you to take an exam. You will need to know you ID number for the test and the proctor will ask to see your ID before you are allowed to take the exam.
Cell phones and other electronic devices (PDA's, etc.) are not allowed to be used during the course of an exam.
The TI30XA (or its solar powered equivalent) is the only calculator allowed for exams or quizzes in PHYS152.
If you arrive late to take an exam you will not be admitted after the first person to finish leaves.
You must sign your exam and write your Bengal Card ID number in the appropriate space. Unsigned exams will not be graded.
Presentations (Note: there will be no presentations scheduled this semester)
For those of you considering a presentation for points you should be aware that all proposals for presentations must be made before (none this semester). Presentations will be scheduled after that. In order to submit a presentation topic for consideration you must e-mail me with your proposal. If your topic is approved you will be responsible for a 10 - 15 minute presentation in class (followed by a question and answer session), a paper of approximately 2000 words to be submitted electronically in MS Word format on or before the date of your presentation, and any overheads or other a/v materials you use (to be submitted to me in a file folder at the conclusion of your presentation). It is the responsibility of the presenter to insure that all a/v devices needed are available at the time of the presentation. The paper/presentation must be crafted entirely by you and used only for this class, i.e., no "double dipping". The paper, presentation, and any a/v materials submitted for points become the property of the instructor of this course and may not be used for any further purpose without their explicit written permission. This will generally not be granted. You must consult at minimum one journal, one book besides the text, and one other source to gather material for a presentation. I reserve the right to accept or reject any presentation proposal without comment.
You must include this cover sheet with your short paper.
If you are scheduled for a presentation and fail to show up you will not be rescheduled.
Plagiarism/Academic Dishonesty
Plagiarism in PHYS152 historically has run the gamut from accidental and relatively minor to deliberate and egregious. If you submit a paper or presentation and it is determined that you have plagiarized another source or sources I will, at minimum, award zero to significantly less than maximum points for your effort. If I determine an intent to deceive on your part (egregious plagiarism) I will recommend to the chair of the Physics Department that you be dismissed from the course with a failing grade.
When you submit a paper it goes to graders who will check your sources and use various web searching tools to scan your text. All of this occurs before I see your paper. If your paper consists of a series of "cut and pastes" from other sources it will probably come up in the screening process. If you have correctly quoted and/or cited material in an appropriate manner your paper will pass the screening process (you probably won't earn very many points with this approach but you will not be guilty of plagiarism). If not, I will be calling you in to discuss your work.
Please do not cheat. Our proctors and I are well aware of most of the tricks and the odds are that you will be caught. If you are caught cheating we will, at minimum, push for your dismissal from PHYS152 with a failing grade and a citation for academic dishonesty.
My volume of e-mail runs between 80 - 100 per day. About 30% of this is junk mail or spam. Because of this volume and the concomitant potential for importing viruses all of my mail is screened before I see it. If you want to be sure that your e-mail gets past screening please preface the subject line with PHYS 152 - 01 or PHYS 152 - 02 followed by the subject of your e-mail, e.g., PHYS 152 - 01, "Proposal for Paper." It is almost certain that e-mail that your e-mail will be discarded if it does not follow this format.
My official e-mail address is hackmart@physics.isu.edu. Please be sure to direct all of your e-mail to this address If you receive an e-mail from me from a different address please be sure to direct your response to the address above.
Questions Concerning Grading
If you have questions about scores on any assignment other than a quiz or an exam the very best way to get an answer is to email the grading staff. To do that you simply submit an email with the subject line PHYS152-01 (or 02) "Attention Graders" in the subject line with your question in the body of the email. You should receive an answer within 48 hours max. Since I have minimal involvement in the grading process I really don't know why you got the grade that you did. My staff, however, will generally be glad to respond to your queries.
listserv
Make sure that you subscribe to the course listserv. This will be the primary method I employ for communicating with you outside of class. You may subscribe multiple addresses if you wish. You may also post to the listserv. There is a list archive that you may check to see what you have missed if you sign up late. I will frequently e-mail information concerning exams, opportunities for points, deadline reminders, etc., to the class on the listserv. Note: it is highly recommended that you use your ISU e-mail account for this purpose. Some e-mail clients (particularly Yahoo and Hotmail) are difficult to configure for non-experts and somewhat unreliable.
Decorum
Please turn off your cell phones before class or set the ringer to an inaudible setting.
If you arrive late for class please be seated in the back of the room and cause as little disturbance as possible. Please do not enter the classroom via the front doors after class has begun.
Please do not carry on side conversations in class during lecture.
Please be courteous to your colleagues.
If you are consistently or seriously in breach of any of the above you will be sanctioned in accordance with ISU's disruptive student policy.
