Hoop & Wheel

PIRA 1Q10.32

In this experiment a hoop and a wheel of the same width, mass, and diameter are rolled down an incline. Ask the students which will win the race or if it will be a tie. The hoop and wheel are placed at the top of the incline and released at the same time. As the picture clearly shows, the wheel wins the race. Because of the hoop's higher moment of inertia, it will always lose the race.
