A simple electromagnet can be made with a nail wrapped with insulated wire. A D battery provides enough current to lift several paper clips or a small mass of iron filings. Show this on an overhead projector so a large class can see. Use a demagnitized nail, and show the students that it will not pick up iron filings before you connect the battery.
