Health Physics (HP) is the science of protecting humans and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation.

The health physics curriculum at ISU draws from the basic sciences - biology, chemistry and physics. Two tracks are offered: one emphasizing biology and the other emphasizing applied science. Both tracks share the same health physics courses and recommend a summer internship between junior and senior years.

The requirements for a BS are listed in the Undergraduate Catalog
The requirements for a MS are listed in the Graduate Catalog
Also offered is a MS in Hazardous Waste Management whose requirements are listed in the Graduate catalog

There are currently four health physics professors at ISU: Dr. Tom Gesell, Dr. Rich Brey, Dr. Doug Wells, and Dr. Jason Harris.

Dr. Tom Gesell  (email: gesell@physics.isu.edu)

Dr. Gesell is Professor of Health Physics at Idaho State University and also serves as Director of the Environmental Monitoring program and the ISU Technical Safety Office (TSO). The Technical Safety Office is responsible for radiation safety and hazardous waste management at ISU.

Courses taught include environmental radiation surveillance, health physics, mathematical methods in physics, accelerator health physics and no-ionizing radiation protection. Dr. Gesell's main research interests are environmental radioactivity, especially natural radioactivity, and radiation dosimetry. He is currently working on the fourth edition of "Environmental Radioactivity from Natural, Industrial and Military Sources" with Professor Merril Eisenbud of University of North Carolina.

Dr. Gesell is a member of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement and chairs their Scientific Committee on Hot Particles. He serves on an EPA advisory committee for radioactive phosphorus slag and on Department of Energy advisory committee on their "Formerly utilized Sites Remedial Action Program." He is a member of the Health Physics Society.

Dr. Brey  (email:brey@physics.isu.edu)

Dr. Brey is the undergraduate advisor. He also directs the ISU Environmental Monitoring Laboratory (EML).

Dr. Wells doug wells ( email: wells@physics.isu.edu)

Dr. Harris  ( email: harris@physics.isu.edu)

Adjunct professors and staff

Ellen Nelson  (email:nelson@physics.isu.edu)

Ellen is the Health Physics secretary.
