Physics Education Research (PER): The PER-Friendly Classroom and the Importance of Reasoning

Dr. Brian A Pyper
Director of Physics Education
BYU-Idaho Department of Physics

Our understanding about how people learn is dramatically changing how we teach. Over the last eighty years, dedicated people interested in physics education and Physics Education Research (PER) have made great strides in teaching and learning physics. The history, methodology, and results of PER are both interesting and important. New data showing the importance of reasoning ability in changing conceptual understanding have implications for how we teach and learn.
