Spent Nuclear Fuel Pyroprocessing in the US and Development of the Safety Analysis and Regulatory Framework for Commercial Application in Korea

Dr. Chad Pope
Department of Nuclear Engineering and Health Physics
Idaho State University

The presentation will include the general aspects of pyroprocessing and experience with pyroprocessing at the Fuel Conditioning Facility in Idaho, the only operational pyroprocessing facility in the world.  The nuclear safety strategy used at the Fuel Conditioning Facility and the efforts to apply the nuclear safety lessons learned to planned commercial pyroprocessing activities in Korea.

Dr. Pope has more than twenty years of direct experience in pyroprocessing facility operations, nuclear criticality safety and nuclear safety.  He is the principal author of the Fuel Conditioning Facility safety analysis report and he is currently working with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) developing the nuclear safety regulatory framework for commercial spent fuel pyroprocessing.
