From Beware of the Tiger to Come Here Kitty: The Evolution of Robotics

Dr. Alba Perez, Chair, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Idaho State University

Robotics technology has been successfully implemented in some manufacturing processes for more than fifty years now, and since then robots have become a key element for the automation of a growing number of industrial activities. Currently, robotics is moving from precise operations in controlled environments to interaction and work with humans in much more unstructured settings. This switch to collaborative robots requires solving several challenges in robot and working space design, environment sensing and understanding, and collaborative task planning. In this talk Dr Perez Gracia will present some of the research activities that are taking place at the Robotics Research Laboratory of Idaho State University in robotic hand design, automatic grasping of unknown objects and human-robot interaction through augmented reality.
