Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Four Level Atomic System

The last 15 years have seen a rapid increase of both theoretical and experimental understanding of quantum coherence and interference, particularly in the area of laser atom interactions, otherwise known as Quantum Optics. Beginning with the ground breaking work of Fano, Scully and others the phenomena of Electro-Magnetically Induced Transparency has been explored at length. In 1998 researchers at Harvard were able to “slow down” laser pulses in super cooled gaseous (three level atomic ) Rubidium to a speed of 17 m/s. This effect has potential applications in quantum computing, storage of optical information to name a few areas. The presenter will outline a new model in which EIT is theoretically shown to occur in a four level  system.
