A description of the large-scale flow tunnel called the Matched Index of
Refraction Flow Facility located at the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho
Falls, Idaho will be presented. This facility permits the use of laser systems
such as Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
to make accurate and non-invasive measurements in and around complex and
difficult geometries in flows with relatively high Reynolds numbers and where
increased spatial resolution is beneficial. The facility, operation and flow
quality is described along with a brief summary of several investigations
conducted with the facility.
