Ground Based Gamma Ray Astronomy:
In Quest for the Origin of Cosmic Rays

After motivating gamma ray astronomy as a mean of identifying cosmic ray acceleration sites, I will show how this program failed so far. The new generation of ground based detectors gives new hopes and preliminary results are very promising. In this context I will give an update on the VERITAS observatory progress toward completion.
