"Accelerator Driven Subcritical Systems: Neutron Sources and Waste Transmutation"

Dr. Frank Harmon
Idaho Accelerator Center/Physics Dept.

Coupling an accelerator driven neutron source with a subcritical assembly of fissile material gives a system with interesting and surprising properties.  The Idaho Accelerator Center is developing an accelerator driven neutron source for such a device as part of the DOE Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative.  There are various possibilities for use of this source, discussions are underway for collaborations involving the University of Texas reactor and/or the Idaho State University subcritical assembly.
