From Materials to Vehicles: Assessing Performance of Energy Storage Technologies for a More Electrified Society

The increased use of electric vehicles and consumer electronics is driving a significant demand for higher performing batteries and other electrochemical storage technologies. New materials research provides a path to increase storage capacity, but often leads to secondary issues with long term performance. This presentation will discuss performance assessment activities at Idaho National Laboratory which are related to the next generation of electrochemical energy storage devices at both the material and cell level. In particular the discussion will highlight the degradation pathways for non-aqueous electrolytes and active electrode materials as well as how performance testing for electric vehicle batteries is performed.
