Be the Electron

As electrons traverse matter they interact in various ways, allowing one to learn about both the nature of the electron and the materials they pass through.  This talk begins with a brief review of what we know about electrons 120 years on from their discovery and how their interactions with simple forms of matter provide clues about the materials they interact with.  This is then extended to our group’s studies of the transport and emission properties of highly disordered insulating materials, where simple analytic quantum solutions of electrons in atoms and periodic solids fail utterly.  As we contemplate the quagmire of our measurements and models, we are oft guided by the musings of one of our group’s graduate students: “…be the electron...
