Electron Accelerator Based Radiotracer Production for Hydrocarbon Extraction

Thanks to the development of two synergistic technologies – horizontal drilling and fracking - the US energy picture is undergoing drastic changes. After years of increasing US petroleum imports, the International Energy Agency now predicts that the US will be virtually energy independent by 2035. This will have profound implications in both economics and world politics.

In this talk, I will discuss the possibilities for electron linac based production of radiotracers which can be used in the extraction of unconventional hydrocarbons. I will also provide a review of the basics of photonuclear physics which serves as the backbone of many of the applications being pursued at the IAC.
