The Science of Risk Communication

Trent L. Clark, Director
Public and Government Affairs
Monsanto - P4 Production
Soda Springs, Idaho

Predicting reactions when communicating risk to an individual is highly nuanced and uncertain. But communicating risk to large groups of people tends to produce responses that follow established norms and patterns. These patterns are described in formulae that have been researched, tested and verified in the work of Dr. Vince Covello of Columbia University and others. Trent Clark is Director of Public and Government Affairs for Monsanto Company, and a former student of Dr. Covello. He will discuss how these formulae affect public opinion formation, and how they can be applied to contemporary public views of risk, radiation, ALARA, approval or disapproval of nuclear energy and other environmental risk scenarios.
